Introduction to 2024 Predictions Recap
Earlier this year, we predicted our critical hot topics for healthcare that we expected to advance throughout the year. We expected to see more AI innovations to increase patient engagement, personalized care options for patients, VR options to provide immersive virtual care, and collaborations with wearables. This article will go over a recap of the progress made in advancing generative AI and personalized care in 2024.
Advancing Generative AI in 2024 Recap
Regarding generative AI, we predicted that overall AI should be easier to train so that medical data is more available but also more secure [1]. We also predicted that AI should streamline workflows and give providers more time to see patients [2]. Furthermore, we predicted that AI will promote patient engagement by providing patients with personalized reminders [2].
In 2024, we saw several healthcare systems develop generative AI tools to speed up the process of developing drugs [3], as well as to decrease administrative burdens [3]. Furthermore, AI was used in medical imaging to create cleaner images used for better diagnostics [3]. AI is also being used to automate administrative work such as scheduling appointments, sending out referrals to providers, and even helping out with clinical notes [4]. This in turn allows providers to free up their time for patient care [4]. Additionally, AI is being implemented in smartphone applications to provide medication reminders, suggestions for physical activity, and even recommendations to talk to a doctor [4]. Therefore, it’s clear that AI in 2024 is streamlining processes so that providers have more time with patients, while also providing patients with personalized reminders and tools.
However, there is still progress needed in correcting potential challenges regarding AI, such as patient privacy and errors [4]. Since AI is dependent on large amounts of databases, it’s hard to keep these databases secure and private [4]. Furthermore, dealing with large amounts of data means that AI can make mistakes that go unnoticed and ultimately lead to adverse effects in patients. To avoid this, it’s important that AI systems are continuously tested to measure their accuracy before being implemented [4].
Advancing Personalized Care in 2024 Recap
In regards to personalized care, earlier this year we discussed advancements in using genomics to accurately make predictions so that treatments were catered to each patient’s specific profile [5]. We also predicted that a patient’s specific genome will be used to select them for specific clinical trials, treatment options, and therapies [5]. Furthermore, we predicted that personalized medicine will advance in a way where a patient’s likelihood for success regarding a particular treatment plan will be predictable so that adverse health effects will be prevented.
This advancement in personalized medicine was accomplished through the use of an AI tool that predicts the effectiveness of an immunotherapy drug in treating cancer based on a blood test [6]. Furthermore, the AI tool makes predictions based on a patient’s age, their cancer, their past therapies, and several other clinical features obtained from the patient [6]. This allows the model to accurately obtain a prediction for how the patient will respond to immunotherapy, and even how long they would live [6]. Therefore, this advancement in personalized care was achieved through the use of AI, and is a step in the right direction towards providing preventative and targeted care to patients.
Additionally, there are personalized care technologies being developed that make it easier to cater treatments for each patient. For instance, personalized cancer vaccines are being developed that alert the immune system of cancer cells so the risk of recurrence is decreased [7]. Furthermore, precision oncology which studies the genetic makeup of tumors in patients can be used to create personalized medicine catered for each patient [7]. This allows for reduced side effects in cancer patients since healthy cells can be left unharmed [7]. Therefore, there are various technologies being developed that create personalized treatment for patients so adverse health effects are avoided while prolonging their life expectancy and improving their quality of life.
