As healthcare advances, it’s more crucial than ever that underserved populations are represented, supported, and protected. This is because they often face additional barriers to care due to language, digital literacy, and culture. This is where user experience comes in, which promotes systems that are intuitive, accessible, and equitable. Specifically, user experience promotes intentional inclusivity, which makes sure that no one is left behind. This is especially crucial when it comes to federal health IT solutions, where usability and trust can directly affect health outcomes. Therefore, prioritizing user-centered design is important for public health goals.

The Role of User Experience in Government Health Technology
Many public healthcare platforms and systems are designed for broad populations, however, they may lack support and structure to meet the needs of underserved groups. For instance, it’s important to remember that underserved populations may face additional barriers to accessing care. Therefore, user experience tools must ensure that these tasks are easy to access and navigate through, so that patients can be involved in their healthcare journeys.
Furthermore, when it comes to representing underserved populations, it’s crucial that their voices are directly inputted into real-world solutions. This means they must be involved in the design process when it comes to deciding user experience solutions. Directly taking user feedback from underserved populations allows for technology to reflect the needs of marginalized communities. This ultimately increases their engagement and increases their trust, allowing for better preventative care. Therefore, government agencies must include underserved voices early in the design process so that technologies reflect real-life needs rather than assumptions.

Consequences of Ignoring User Experience
When user experience from the perspective of underserved communities is neglected, it can result in poor health outcomes for vulnerable populations. For instance, patients in marginalized communities may avoid care entirely due to frustrating systems, misinterpret critical medical instructions, or lose access to benefits. Furthermore, inaccessible platforms may increase burdens for providers, by making basic tasks more complicated. For instance, if a patient is unable to schedule online, they may try to call the office instead, result in in increased calls and higher administrative costs. Additionally, poor user experience in public health systems deepens distrust, results in missed care, and widens disparities in health. This directly undermines the goals of federal health programs, which must ensure quality health outcomes for all patients. Therefore, user experience must emphasize a focus on promoting inclusive solutions, by directly involving patients in the design process. Only then can health tools ensure accessibility regardless of income, location, language, or culture.
